Your Brain on Massage

Many of us get massage therapy to help relieve chronic pain conditions such back and neck pain, headaches, carpal tunnel, or sciatica. Brain awareness week kicks off on March 11th and I wanted to take some time to share some of the wonderful benefits of regular massage to your brain! Regular massage can stimulate brain function, reduce depression and anxiety, and keep stress levels down. The Touch Research Institute in Florida provides many studies that confirm this. During a massage, your therapist applies pressure to the muscles, that stimulates receptors in the brain. This stimulates the production of “feel good” neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin. Trigger point therapy (applying pressure to tender muscle tissue to relieve pain and dysfunction) has been proven to release our body’s natural pain relieving compounds: endorphins. People react to massage with such an increased sense of well being that hospitals are starting to offer it to its patients!
